New Sochi Airport Officially Opens

The new Sochi airport terminal built by Oleg Deripaska’s Basic Element at a cost of 6.2 billion rubles ($200 million) officially opened Thursday. This was built for the purpose of serving passengers arriving for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The terminal is considered as the first major facility commissioned for the games and ticks off a box on Russia’s long to-do list in preparation for the event.

Bazel Aero to introduce a new terminal at Sochi Airport in Febrary/March of 2010

A new international airport terminal at Sochi Airport could be fully commissioned in February-March of 2010, told Interfax General Director of Bazel Aero Sergey Likharev.

According to him, the Sochi airport has already begun to test operation of the sector “B” in the new terminal.

“Currently, we have already mastered the construction of a new terminal, about 3.8 billion rubles, including over 2 billion rubles own, and about 1.7 billion rubles borrowed funds. However, about 2 billion rubles are expected to master by the end of the year, as well as still about 1 billion over the next two years “, - added S. Likharev.

Flight Delays Continue Nationwide

The AirUnion alliance of airlines in Russia continues to face numerous problems, with over 1500 passengers stranded in most Russian airports. AirUnion reported that the delays in  departure and arrival of flights in several airports was largely due to the aviation fuel crisis.  Dalavia Airlines informed airport authorities that two of its flights which are due to arrive in Sochi, would be delayed by over three days. Most passengers have had to book tickets with other available airlines to reach their respective destinations.

 

Statistics Reveal Increase in Passenger Traffic At Sochi Airport

Sochi international Airport has increased its passenger traffic by more than 23.9% in 2008, when compared to last year. Between January and July this year, air carriers reportedly executed 6,787 flights. While a 53.5% increase was observed for International flights, passenger traffic for domestic airlines escalated by 9%. With efforts to promote tourism in Sochi reaping gradual positive results, officials are hoping that the recent conflicts would not affect these statistics.
