Schools across Russia held lesson on Olympic and Paralympic values and the history of sochi Olympic Mascots. This is to signal the beginning of the Sochi 2014 Mascot competition.

Students across the country were given the chance to design the mascots during lessons for the coming Winter Games in Sochi as part of the competition. They were also taught about the mascots which were the symbols of the previous Winter Games in Vancouver, Turin and Salt Lake City.

The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee and the Publishing and Trading Centre “Marka” have already signed a licensing agreement which allows “Marka” the right to issue post and philatelic items with the Sochi 2014 emblem.

This project was carried out by the Federal Communication Agency as well as the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Pochta Rossii “Russian Post”. The first stamps will be released as early as January 2011 and the philatelic project is expected to start in four years time.

Tsochi teachershe Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee has announced the start of the Russian national "Olympic Teacher" competition 2010. The competition is being run both by the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee as well as the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Year of the Teacher. The award ceremony will take place in October in Moscow at an event celebrating World Teachers’ Day and honoring the winners of the Russian national Teacher of the Year competition.

The goal of the Olympic Teacher Competition is to attract more active and creative teachers to help develop educational materials which will give students a fuller idea of Olympic and Paralympic values.

His team faces the challenge of transforming the Black Sea resort of Sochi, and its surrounding area, into a wintersports arena.

This means the construction of a new winter community in the North Caucasus mountains, the construction of 300 kilometres of roads, 100km of rail, 39 tunnels and 24 thermal and hydro power stations.

Two of Sochi’s most popular nightclubs faced closure when they became targets for unprecedented fire safety inspections on the eve of the gay and lesbian film festival. It was reported that these nightclubs were shut down as they broke the fire code.

The organizers of the festivals were utterly distressed and indignant as the sudden fire safety inspections have caused the closure of the nightclubs. Therefore, the festival will not be held at these venues.

The festival, that has “Look Broader, Be Kinder”, had been facing numerous hurdles  that include the termination of contracts with other organizers. The organizers have been implying indirectly, that the authorities in Sochi have been displeased with the concept of the festival ever since it was initiated. The representative from the organizing company, Sergeyeva said that the tickets for the festival will be refunded at the venues and alternative arrangements are being made to relocate the festival to other venues.

In the meanwhile, the nightclub, The Place, has been sealed and will remain closed for at least ten days.

Russia welcomed its Olympics heroes who returned home from Beijing on Monday. Hundreds of fans,supporters and families of the athletes turned up at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport to greet them with flowers and gifts. Russian athletes have brought home 23 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze medals, which they won for their spectacular performances. Putin has sent his congratulations to the athletes and their families, promising to focus on implementing further developments in terms of sponsorships and infrastructure for skilled athletes. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has expressed dissatisfaction over the building projects in Olympic sites by criticizing the lack of coordination that led to some major flaws. This comment, made by the Russian Prime Minister during a meeting on environmental requirements for the 2014 Olympics, has been raising some serious concerns over this matter amongst the officials and respective committees.

Multikon-Inženjering, a company based in Belgrade, is all set to design and supervise the construction of Sochi Airport. This project, spanning over 75,000 square feet, is expected to be completed in time for the Winter Olympics in 2014. With the new facelift, the existing airport will be one of the new additions welcoming the world to this part of Russia for the sports spectacle.

Olympic flame arrives in St Petersburg

The Olympic flame has arrived Russia’s northern capital, St. Petersburg. It was delivered on a special flight from Istanbul which landed at 3am local time.Officials and journalists turned out to welcome the Olympic symbol despite the early hour.
